Northstar Problem Gambling Alliance has announced it will offer two full scholarships for professionals interested in becoming problem gambling counselors. The scholarships will pay the full cost for the online training course offered by the University of Minnesota Duluth Extension.

Upon completion of the course, counselors will become part of the Department of Human Services provider network and thus eligible for reimbursement for treatment and assessment services. The scholarship applies to professionals who are already licensed alcohol and drug counselors or who are licensed in another areas, such as social work, marriage and family therapy, and psychology.

“Our goal is to increase the number of problem gambling counselors in Northern Minnesota,” says Cathie Perrault, executive director for Northstar. “There’s a greater demand for gambling services in that part of the state than what is presently available.”

Residents of the following Northern Minnesota counties are eligible for the scholarships: Aitkin, Becker, Beltrami, Carlton, Cass, Clay, Clearwater, Cook, Crow Wing, Hubbard, Itasca, Kittson, Koochiching, Lake, Lake of the Woods, Mahnomen, Marshall, Norman, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake, Roseau and St. Louis.
