Fall is a busy time for NPGA. In an effort to share as many stories and information as possible about how problem gambling is affecting Minnesotans, we participate in professional conferences and community events far and wide. We talk about what can be done to prevent people from falling into a gambling addiction and how they can get help if problems have already occurred.

Here are some highlights of our busy fall itinerary:

It is important for law enforcement and corrections professionals to understand gambling addiction and how it impacts peoples’ behavior around money. Mike Downey, retired probation officer and member of the Northstar Speaker’s Network, will attend several events this fall to talk to fellow officers about gambling addiction. These include the Department of Corrections “Closing the Gap” conference on Sept 2; the 33rd Minnesota Sheriff’s Association Administrator’s conference on Sept 15-16; the Dakota County Jail Resource Fair on Oct 8; the Minnesota Correction’s Resource fair in Mankato on Oct 21-22; and the Stillwater Correctional Facility Transitions fair on Oct 28.

In addition to law enforcement and corrections, outreach will also include the Augsburg College Health Fair on Sept 23; the Professional Presentation at Bemidji Area Programs on Oct 6-7; the St Louis County Health & Human Services Conference in Duluth on Oct 15-16; and the MARRCH Conference at RiverCentre in St. Paul on Oct 27-29.

Speaking one-to-one with a wide range of audiences is one of the best ways Northstar can share its message and help connect the community. If you have questions about any of these events, or are interested in having a Northstar representative visit your treatment program, clinic, or community organization, contact us at Linda@NorthstarProblemGambling.org. All of our services are provided at no cost to the hosting organization.
